Guatemala is the world's eighth-largest coffee producer and one of the best places to grow the crop. Coffee seedlings were brought here and planted by Jesuit missionaries in 1750, and the industry was developed by German settlers in the late 19th century. Most of the plantations are located in the south of the country (Amatitlan, Antiqua), where the volcanic slopes of the hills and lush vegetation provide ideal conditions for coffee seedlings - especially for growing in the shade. Plants grown in the shade develop more slowly and thus have an intense flavor and higher natural sugar content in the beans. Guatemala's humid climate, abundant rains, lush greenery - these are ideal conditions for growing the perfect arabica with a complex flavor. Guatemala Maragogype is a variety of coffee with exceptionally large beans, called "elephant bean." It comes from the southern regions of the country, where it is grown on the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountains.
